I often use several fishing methods when i go trout fishing as i enjoy the variation that the different approaches bring. Although this is sometimes out of necessity, such as for example; when my local river the Ebbw is muddy brown following a prolonged heavy down pour of rain, and fly fishing for trout would prove futile, as a trout would be unlikely to see a perfectly presented fly above its own nose three inches under the waters surface. It therefore makes good sense to me to then switch to spinning, as a spinner or lure vibrates and makes noise thereby attracting the fishes attention. You can see from this that there will be circumstances when other trout fishing methods could improve your catch. We anglers all have our own likes and dislikes personally i would agree with Hannibal Lector that;” its good to try new things”. Below is a selection of the most common trout fishing methods and an article on a less common fishing method for catching trout (tickling trout).
Casting for trout at a basic level involves practicing your wrist action. First ,having set up your rig with the correct weigh for the water you are fishing, place your index finger over the line just above the reel pressing it against the rod handle keeping a firm grip of the handle where it feels the most comfortable for you to swing the rod forward in one motion from about shoulder level. Next release the arm of your reel. Then practice swinging the rod gently forward in a constant motion. As you arm comes forward your wrist will naturally become level with the rest of your arm, at this point you should release your index finger in order for the line to cast. You should then put the reel arm back on and make any necessary adjustments to tighten the line and rest your rod ,or to retrieve the line if you are using a spinner or lure. This is just a basic outline of casting which is right for worm fishing and spinning, practice will soon make this seem like second nature to you. However, fly casting is another story altogether. If you are considering learning to fly fish you should first get in some tuition. This will put you on the right track and save you a lot of time and disappointment. Fly fishing tuition need not cost the earth. Many local angling clubs and fisheries often run local fly fishing courses that offer expert tuition at very affordable prices and the knowledge you will gain will prove invaluable.
