Trout fishing in Merthyr Tydfil

Llwyn On reservoir

I recently returned home to Wales after an 18 year interlude in England and was lucky enough to settle in the Brecon beacons national park near the trout fishing reservoir at Llwyn Onn, near Merthyr Tydfil. When i  was a young boy growing up in Wales, i never had enough money to buy a fishing license, let alone a rod license, and was happily tickling trout from the age of 12 onwards. For the error of my younger days i have nothing but regrets ( that those days are over ).However, now i am older, i do believe in fishing conservation and realize that every penny of Llwyn onn trout lake with the beacons in backgroundthe rod license helps this cause and since we are all better off these days (if only financially ) i also release 99 percent of the wild brown trout i catch. Well the first thing that will strike you about Llwyn Onn is the beautiful scenery with a view of the Brecon beacons on a clear day. Llwyn On is a one acre fishery owned by Welsh Water. Day tickets are available at the nearby Garwnant visitor center from the ticket machine .Presently at only £13.60 ,(6 fish) for a full days fishing, other permits available. There is good parking around the lake and if you want to stay more than a day to explore other lakes in the Brecon beacons national park, there is a nearby campsite which also takes caravans(garwen) and Llwyn Onn guest house. There is a daily limit of six fish per license that may be taken. The lake is well stocked with rainbow trout and there are plenty native brown trout, if you catch one you'll know it as even a  tiddler puts up a good fight. The average fish are between one and two and a half pounds although my younger brother recently caught a six and a half pound rainbow on a mepps spinner and there are larger fish in there. Llwyn On resevoir allows, worm, spinner, bubble and fly fishing methods. The  water is fed by the source of the river Taff. You might notice lots of minnows around the shallows, these fish are getting scarce here in the UK, so it is good practice not to catch them for bait as an artificial minnow lure or spinner  may improve your catch without depleting these food fish for the trout. As the light begins to fade gnats start to nibble so bring repellant, this is a good time for fly fishing and the fish also tend to bottom feed better at this time as well as early morning. Llwyn Onn is about 5 miles from Merthyr Tydfil town off the A470 road to Brecon. This is really a lovely place for trout fishing and if you forget your lunch ,Fern’s kitchen will dole you out a burger and tea on the A470 layby on the far bank of the lake .If you run out of anything there is a fishing tackle shop in nearby Cefn Coed and the owner will be happy to clue you up with local fishing knowledge( baits and license available here too).
