Soldier Palmer Fly-Trout Flies-Wet Flies |

|
The soldier palmer fly is like all palmered flies inasmuch as it has a thick body with a few or no tail fibres and no wings. It is easily recognized by the thick hackle collar. When using the wet fly version it is best fished as the top dropper of several other wet flies. The technique is to drag the soldier palmer fly across the water to give the impression of a an insect trying to break the waters surface. At the turn of the twenentieth century three Americans improved on some older British salmon flies. The trio responsible for the soldier palmer fly (originally a dry fly only) were Hewitt, La Branche and Monell where inspired and followed in the footsteps of the great Theodore Gordon. I find that the soldier palmer is best fished as the top dropper and where a moderate wind is present. |
