Peter Ross Fly-Trout Flies-Wet Flies

The Peter Ross Fly is another one of the great Scottish invented flies. This fly was adapted from the old Teal and Red, by Peter Ross of the town of Killin on Loch Tay in the late 1800’s. Today it remains a very popular Loch Fly up in Scotland as well as being one of the top trout flies used by anglers the world over and also makes a very good sea trout fly.

Peter Ross Fly Materials

Hook: Wet Fly, down-eyed size 10-14, Silk/Thread: Black thread, Body: Front 1/2 - Scarlet seal's fur substitute. Rear 1/2 - Medium silver flat tinsel, Rib: Fine oval silver tinsel ,Wing: Teal flank , Hackle: soft black hen hackle ,Tail: Golden pheasant tippets ,

Peter Ross Fly Tying Method                                                                                                                                                                               Whip the thread down the shank of the hook toward bend, starting at 1/6 distance from eye. Tie in small bunch of fibres of Golden Pheasant tippets.Tie in both tinsels. Carry the thread forward half the length of the body.  Wind flat tinsel to make rear half of body and tie off. Use scarlet fur as dubbing to build up the front half of the body and tie off 1/6 from the eye.  Wind oval silver tinsel forward to rib body in equal turns and tie off. Tie in hen hackle in the front of  the body making only two turns. Tie in rolled teal fibres on top of the hook behind the eye to make wing. Pinch black hackle downwards and under the body to make the throat at same time as angling the wing back over body at 30 degrees .Make the head and tie off with whip finish behind the eye.
