Mallard and Claret Fly-Trout Flies-Wet Flies |
|
Created by William Murdoch of Aberdeen, Scotland, in the 1850’s. The Mallard and Claret Fly is definitely one of the best all round trout flies. As it name suggests the fly is constructed with the use of Mallard Duck feathers with a claret coloured body. I find that the Mallard and Claret Fly is best fished either as a single fly on a dead drift or as a middle dropper on a three fly set up, varying the rate of retrieval. This wet fly belongs to the Mayfly family and is particularly useful where the water is peaty. It is best for brown and rainbow trout in lakes and sea trout on rivers, although brownies will take the Mallard and Claret in rivers too. |
