Freezing trout

Always gut or fillet your trout on the day you catch or buy them,as this will help preserve them better. Use freezer bags as trout are very rich in beneficial fatty oils which also happen to go off quicker than most other fish.Plastic freezing bags prevent these oils turning rancid by preventing oxidation taking place through contact with the air. Place the gutted or filleted trout in a freezer bag and add a little water to the fish to create a glaze that will help prolong its freezer life.Next sqeeze out any excess air before sealing the bag tightly.

As a general rule frozen trout is best eaten within three months of freezing, although trout will keep for longer i would recommend that any trout in your freezer for over four months should be thrown out to make way for this seasons catch. It is also good practice to label the freezer bags containing your fish with the date on which they were frozen to prevent any confusion. When you want to cook your trout  thaw  the fish over night in a refrigerator(never leave out to thaw).
