The black gnat fly is an excellent trout fly to use when any small dark or black insects or the real flies are on the water. Clouds of gnats can often be seen hovering over the water and it is inevitable that some of these will fall into the water, thus becoming a food source for the trout. Gnats are a delicacy to all trout species. |

Hook: Dry fly size 10 to 16 , Silk/Thread: black, Body:dubbing: fine black fur, Wing: white or very pale grey poly yarn , Hackle: black cock hackle. |

Black Gnat Fly Tying Instructions |

|
Whip the black silk or thread down the shank of the hook toward bend, starting at 1/8 distance from eye of the hook. Apply the dubbing and build a thin body working forward to 1/4 distance from the eye of the hook. Tie in the poly yarn sloping it back low over the body no longer than the shank of the hook. Tie in the black cock hackle in front of the poly yarn. Do not exceed 3 turns of the hackle and Tie off the hackle behind the eye of the hook. Finish off using a clear varnish. |
