Alder Fly-Trout Flies-Wet Flies |
|
The alder fly spends most of its time near water. The Alder Fly has relatively broad wings and yet the adult alder fly is a poor flyer. Used as a wet fly, the Alder Fly is one of the best trout flies to employ near reeds or overhanging vegetation and walls, where alder flies sometimes fall into the water. The alder fly pattern has been used by countless fly anglers for over three centuries, which is proof enough of its success as one of the all time best trout flies. The ideal time to use the alder fly is from about the middle of May until the end of June as this tends to be the alder fly season on most trout fishing waters. |

Whip the silk down the shank of the hook towards the bend, starting at 1/8 th distance from the eye. Tie in three peacock herls. Twist the herls and silk together and bind them around the shank to make a fat body. Twisting the herls helps to preserve the body after it has been taken by a trout. Tie in the hen hackle throat then tie in the peahen wing and slant back at 45 degrees.Tie off with whip finish behind the eye. Use black or clear varnish on the head to complete the Alder Fly . |
